Overview

Together with Heath Nash, we created The Poollution pool cover woven from pieces of ocean trash that had been collected on Cape Town’s iconic beaches. Hundreds of pieces of discarded waste were arranged in a cover and transported to tidal pools across Cape Town. As a brand that upcycles waste into functional gear, how could Sealand upcycle the Poollution cover into a product without just letting it become yet another throwaway item? The solution was to look at each individual piece of the cover as plastic that had been floating in the ocean. We upcycled these pieces into a limited range of summer pool floaties, making them available to the public, at the Corona J-Bay Open, to influencers, and on social media as products. The clash of pristine home pool floaties with “dirty” ocean plastic drove home the responsible consumption message and positioned the new Sealand ECONYL® range as the product for people who are looking to shop responsibly.
